Internal Candidate

Remember this update where I told you I got a new (interim) job working with VT's international students? Well I'm going through that round of awkwardness where you are an internal candidate. I did this while I was at Arkansas, only it was for a different position, not the one I was currently in like this time. So all week my colleagues have been gathering in an office with a closed door while I help cover our front desk so they can make phone interview calls.

Today I had my phone interview and drove home for an "early lunch" to not be upstairs in my office while they phoned from below. I'm trying to smile at the situation and know that it will only be terribly awkward and uncomfortable if I make it so.

Hopefully another month and this will all be a small blip on the calendar behind us.

  1. Lynds, I was in that EXACT situation while at the U of M and it was one of the more awkward experiences of my life! I even did the whole "early lunch" bit so that I could do my phone interview from home and not hear their questions through the wall of the office next door! The campus visit was interesting too...weird interviewing for a job that you're already doing, when everyone already knows your performance, and you are expected to have more concrete ideas about what you will do in the position. So if you need someone to commiserate with, holler at me! :)

  2. And just to clarify, I say it was awkward, but I think that was really all in my head. I just tried to be as normal and light-hearted about it all as possible on the surface, but in my head it definitely caused some anxiety! ;)
