Fruit flies and Chaco's

My dad commented last month that "my word" was 'annoying.' He said that I liked to say that a lot and said it all the time when I was living at home. Sounds kind of negative but I realized this week that there have been two things that I have described as annoying and I thought I'd vent here and ask for feedback if you have any.

Our new apartment, while a lovely upgrade, has come with a host of fruit flies. The building has had issues since it was built three years ago because the trash system has the compactor in the building with trash chutes on each floor. So our apartment last week was swarming with these annoying gnatty little bugs. I was seriously having a meltdown over them because they were EVERYWHERE. I even found one in Heath's diaper- on the outside. It grosses me out. We have googled a solution and the best we have found is putting beer out with a lid on it and poked holes. Our living room looks like the house in Signs with water glasses everywhere. It has contained the madness but not eliminated it completely. Any tips?

I love my Chacos. I have wanted a pair ever since I worked at summer camp in high school and thought they were the coolest, especially for their amazing tan lines in the summer ;). My wonderful hubby bought me a pair two years ago and I was thrilled. What I discovered about this wonderful sandal is that they come with a price- smelly shoes and feet every couple of months. If you have owned a pair you know exactly what I'm talking about. Every now and again they go through this stage of absolute stinkiness and I'm not sure what the best way to eliminate it is. Have you tried anything that works well?

*This post is dedicated to my friend Mel who is always great about being interactive in her blog posts and I know wants me to talk about something other than a baby all the time on here ;)

  1. 1. Thanks for the shout out!! I LOVE interactive and will be calling you soon!

    2. Fruit flies/knats are yuck! I have a case of the fruit flies these days and I've heard something about bleach helping, BUT may not be good with a baby around...

    3. Chacos- here's the skinny- you can throw those suckers in the washing machine and let them air dry. The grooves where the straps go that get all guncky and gross. I heard of epople taking them to the car wash and spraying them with the pressure wash and seeing all the gross come out. baking soda and a tooth brush could work as well. Make sure you floss the straps (pull them back and forth to release gunk)every other wash or so. Also-dilute some Armor All and spray it in the strap slot and it will help the straps slide a little better.

    4. This is a LONG comment.

  2. Oh, Lynds…I've got you on this. We had a little collection bucket for composting but many times I forgot to take the compost to the outdoor bin and --whammo!--fruit flies. Those little bastards are ridiculous! So, here's what you do:

    1. Get a small soda bottle (like 16 oz or so).
    2. Drink contents of said soda bottle (otherwise the rest will be difficult).
    3. Rinse soda bottle.
    4. Cut off the top 1/4 or so of the bottle--just a little below the neck at it's fullest point.
    5. Invert the top back in to the bottle and tape the joint closed.
    6. Put a small bit of apple cider vinegar (like maybe a 1/4 cup) in the bottle.
    7. Laugh wildly as the stupid fruit flies go in, but can't figure out how to fly out.

I've also done a bowl or cup with plastic wrap and a largish hole poked in there, but I think the soda bottle method works better.

I've eradicated many a fruit fly with this method. Works like a charm.

  3. Fruit Flys: I consider myself a bit of an expert in this field because I had a rather large infestation of them about a year ago. Best solution I found was several cups with a little bit of dish soap and vinegar, and don't leave any fresh food out anywhere!

Chacos: I usually just throw mine in the washing machine and then the dryer. Some times you have to readjust the straps a bit when you get them out and it is rather noise but I find it gets the job done.
