Hey Mama

When I was a senior in college at Warner Pacific it was a huge deal that we booked a concert for McGuire Auditorium to host Shane & Shane with Mat Kearney opening for them. I hadn't heard any of Mat's stuff until that night but since he was from down the road in Eugene there was a nice showing of support in the Portland crowd. Being part of the student leadership team coordinating the day I also got to eat lunch and hang out with the guys (in the Tabor House, formerly referenced as the 'Callbox' house because that's where the guys from Kutless lived before they were Kutless, and were Callbox).

I remember Mat being a super cool guy who was comfortable to chill with us college kids and actually asked about our life. I told him I was from Fresno and he told me he had friends who played soccer there when he played at Cal State Chico. He won my vote as a good human being to chat with and after he performed that night I was a fan of his stuff too. So thanks to my musically-on-top-of-it husband he has always made sure we've had Mat's newest album downloaded and ready to go on the ipod.

Mat's latest album Young Love has some awesome beats and you can probably see where this story is now going to involve my 20 month toddler who likes to bust a move and tap to a good tune. Heath has become obsessed with the single Hey Mama. Now when I say obsessed I mean anytime we get into the car he needs to hear this song. And we know it is this song because if we play a different one he will shake his head and say no, no. When Hey Mama ends Heath will sign for more and say ai which I think is his word for again. Because when I ask, again? He shakes his head yes and grins from ear to ear signing over and over for more- more! The song restarts and Heath taps his feet from the carseat, in the air.

Here is a video recap of our life in the car these last three weeks:

I knew we were getting to the point of obsession when Heath came to the living room the other day and tried to turn the iSpeaker on by himself. I turned the music on and he became upset. I asked, do you want your song? He grins and shakes his head yes and signs for more.

Good thing he chose a song and musician I enjoy as well!
