Positive Psychology

I thought you all would appreciate hearing this recent conversation between J and myself.

L: Oh wow I just noticed that I have the beginning of stretch marks forming on my stomach.
J: Oh yeah?
L: Hmmm. (pause) I think they make me feel skinny.
J: The stretch marks make you feel skinny?
L: Yeah.
J: Why is that?
L: Because it is my body's way of saying this is not a normal size for you and it's trying to accommodate.
Insert laughter here. And applause for my husband for handling that with style- I'm sure it was similar to a 'do these jeans make me look fat' conversation.

Part of our birthing classes have been talking through encouraging statements during labor and what positive things the coach can say to help build confidence for the mom. I love our instructor and she will give us phrases to use instead of saying this is painful, recognize that each contraction is 'powerful and your body's way of bringing the baby closer to you.' I guess all of this positive psychology is wearing off on me, and I think that is a good thing!
This 36 week picture does not lie- the stretch marks are there and getting a little longer each week.
