Roots

There are many times since becoming a parent and singing to Heath that I have thought 'what on earth would I do if it weren't for growing up in the church?' I am weekly amazed by how deep my repertoire goes. We have settled into a few more kidsy-favorites for bedtime routine: Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves the Little Children, Zaccheus. Then there are the nights where I dig deeper into my hymn history and sing the Doxology or Jesus Something about that Name.

Tonight Heath had not settled down for bedtime yet and so I left just the lamp on in his room and while he played with his books we had some family sing a long. This is what came out tonight!
Give me gas for my Ford, keep me truckin' for the Lord
Give me gas for my Ford I pray, hallelujah
Give me gas for my Ford, keep me truckin for the Lord
Give me gas til the break of day

And I will sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna to the King of Kings
sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna to the King of Kings!

Oh goodness. I am definitely becoming my mother.

What songs do you remember from your childhood?
Are there regulars that have become part of your routine now?

  1. Wait....so it's not normal to sing that song if you don't have a kid? Then I definitely don't sing it...a lot. Nope.

  2. Too cute! :) I sing that to Vera too. I also sing The Frog Song, Let's Go Bowling at the Bowling Green, Alice Where Are You Going?, I Love You a Bushel And A Peck, and then, of course, the Christian favs. When we change V's diaper and stand her up we sing Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus. I also sing Something About That Name and Rolled Away. Vera does the hand signs for that one. :) Fun blog post! :)

  3. We have been singing a lot of hymns (mostly to calm ourselves!) and a random song about Noah, which I can't believe I even remember. (The Lord said to Noah there's going to be a floody, floody... Anyone?) I like the look of the blog, Lynds! Cute.

  4. Was thinking of you this morning and found that walking boy in the last post video...my goodness. I used to sing "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" as lullabies to my babes, but the number of church/camp songs I have in my brain (and embarrass Mattie with) would astound pretty much everyone but Trevor Bates, maybe. : )
